Origin Of Long Term Care Insurance

At the beginning of 1980’s Medicare started to use a system called the diagnosed related group of guidelines for the prepayments to hospitals. This has really given hospitals authority and the incentive to discharge the patients very shortly after admission to the hospital.

The hospital obtains paid the same whether the patient is in 3 days or 6 days. Thus the hospital can make more money if they get the bed space for the next patient. The problem that this has imposed is that those patients that were not ready to go back to their homes must be in their house to recover. The problem is that Medicare only pays up to 21 days of skilled nursing care. Consequently, if a patient is not recovered after the 21 days in the nursing home, then funds must be afford by patients themselves. Obvious, the high nursing home rates will bring the patients a big mount bills soon.

Insurance companies have just in the last decade recognized this problem and now are offering long term care insurance to address this problem. The long term insurance rates vary by geological location, as well as state and local regulations. The premiums are expensive, so a person must weigh out the advantages and the disadvantages of every long term care insurance policies to find the most suitable one which faultlessly meets his or her needs.

Many people have the wrong idea about that their health insurance will cover the long term care. Unfortunately health insurance covers the medical bills, hospital bills and some prescriptions, but they don’t cover nursing home expenses. Medicare will pay for skilled nursing home care only for patients that are able to fully recover from their injuries or illnesses. Then the myth is that a person can always fall back on Medicaid, but Medicaid is for the people who fall under the low income guidelines and has little or no assets.

If a person can allow the long-term insurance of care, it is strongly recommended to him that purchases it when he is young, because the rates are appreciably lower.
